Prisoners were referred to as caverne (dwellers in caves), and they came from all over Germany. The Germans had begun work on the Nordhausen tunnel and underground factory in 1934, when they had to place the prisoners there. The prisoners earned about half a mark a day, but they had to work 16 hours a day. One tunnel was large enough to accommodate 6,000 labourers. 827ec27edc
