Neeson plays a sleepy-eyed, slightly decrepit but still hyperactive detective heading home to his true love, who has just left him for a rich guy. All of this is set up by a phone call: a kid on a commuter train has fallen out of his seat and suffered a head injury. Naturally, Neeson takes the case, even though it's his birthday and he's supposed to spend it with the girl he hasn't seen for years. In his younger days, he'd been a boxing champion, but due to a seizure-inducing mishap in which he knocked himself out and woke up in a Mexican prison, he's been reduced to being a taxi-driving detective. I'll leave it to you to decide whether this is a setup for a criminal who's trying to kill Neeson, or for a death-row inmate who's trying to get himself an early release. All I know is that the kid is already dead by the time Neeson shows up to open the case, and the murderer ends up dead, too. At first, Neeson is overjoyed to have a chance to work again, but then he starts thinking about all the paperwork he has to do -- which is the same thing a guy who's planning a robbery thinks about, but with better dialogue. By the end of the movie, he's nearing retirement and has given up his taxi-driving job for good.
