In the band's early years, Carney played second guitar and Auerbach played bass. Over time, Carney became an integral part of the band's songwriting and they both began to play electric guitar, with Carney eventually taking over as lead guitarist. The group's style has been described as American blues rock, blues-rock, blues punk, country blues, and garage rock. The band's musical style has been compared to that of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, BB King, The Doors, and other blues rock bands of the 1960s. Carney has cited R.L. Burnside, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, John Lee Hooker, and John Hammond as musical influences, and Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes, and Blues Traveler as artistic influences. Carney is a significant figure in the Cincinnati blues scene, and the band has frequently opened for John Lee Hooker and the last band that Hooker performed with, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Carney has spoken of how he was influenced by blues legend B.B. King, who played guitar lessons once a week at Carney's mother's house.[16][17]
The Black Keys is a bilingual band. Carney and Auerbach have both stated that they were both influenced by The Clash, and that listening to their music while learning English influenced their guitar playing. The band has performed most of their shows entirely in English but has done a few shows in Spanish.
The Black Keys' first two albums were supported by a small club show following their 2002 album release, but the band's extensive touring schedule began in 2006, after the release of El Camino. The Big Come Up was released in August 2003, at the height of the group's success, and their second album was released in May 2008, a few months before the release of 827ec27edc
