The first nylon was manufactured by DuPont, and the most significant pioneer in the nylon industry was to be the man who guided the company through the first seven years of nylon's development. Washington University alumnus Julian W. Hill was recruited to work at DuPont in 1935, to assist in the development of the new polymer. Hill was the founder of the first nylon plant, and the first nylon laboratory, at DuPont's experimental station in Wilmington, Delaware in 1939.[21] By the time Hill arrived in the laboratory, DuPont had been working with wool, silk, rayon, and cellulose acetate for several years. DuPont had purchased an acetylacetonate paper factory in Germany in 1932, and started producing acetylacetonate polymers in 1934; these polymers were later used for rayon fiber. In 1935, DuPont scientists had shown that it was possible to produce and dye nylon 6.6.[9] In early 1934, DuPont scientists R.P. Carothers, H.F. Bliesner, L.K. Jones, L.W. Marr, R.P. Ball, and W.H. Peters reported that they had produced a water-insoluble nylon (nylon 6.6) using a crystalline salt that was formed at room temperature, and that had to be heated to 285 °C (545 °F) to react to form a polymer. This reaction is now known as the first nylon synthesis.[9] DuPont filed a patent for nylon on August 7, 1934.[9] The first nylon was produced on February 28, 1935, at DuPont's research facility at the DuPont Experimental Station.[13] It had all the desired properties of elasticity and strength. However, it also required a complex manufacturing process that would become the basis of industrial production in the future. DuPont obtained a patent for the polymer in September 1938,[23] and quickly achieved a monopoly of the fiber.[11] Carothers died 16 months before the announcement of nylon, therefore he was never able to see his success.[9] Hill was the first to produce a nylon fiber.[11] DuPont began selling their nylon fiber in 1938.[9] Fiber spun from nylon 6.6 has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is lightweight. It is used in baby's clothing, upholstery, coatings, paper coatings, and insulation. Nylon 6.
