I don’t have a pro-rig, since I’m more of a DIY guy. I’m an old-school fan of having a two-channel mixer rather than a sixteen-track. I prefer the sound quality of a two-channel, because I know that I can do everything on the first channel. I don’t need to worry about using one channel as a master and the other as a slave. I can just use both.
I am very well aware that this setup isn’t the end-all, be-all for a good live recording. I’m not a pro, but I know that if I’m using a large number of mic pres and EQs, then I’m gonna probably muck up the sound. When I came up with my own setup, I wanted something that was simple and flexible, so I can use it for my own music and for my other job as an engineer. I could come in and record a demo and demo it in two hours. I don’t have to use a separate studio. If I want to make some small adjustments, I can do it. I’m not the type to have a seven-figure studio that’s just for recording demos.
As for recording software, I use the excellent AXIOM Audio Pro , which I've used on numerous projects of mine. I've been using it since version 3, and still use it as the primary recording software on my laptop, with Audacity and Sound Forge. I've used it on both Windows and Mac platforms, and it's easy to use, fairly stable, and has good support.
On “Kashmir”, I’m looking for a similar sound to what I used in the “Heartbreaker” mix. I like the way the intro goes, and the way it builds, but I think the guitar is a little too bright. It needs more stereo separation.
