The Blu-ray Disc was first announced on October 12, 2004, by Toshiba and Sony, as a successor to the Digital Versatile Disc, or DVD (commonly known as a Blu-ray Disc or BD), which was introduced in April 2001 and became the dominant optical disc format for home video.
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDAA) was established on June 17, 2005, and was formed of video equipment manufacturers, retailers and producers. BDAA was established as a non-profit trade association to represent the interests of the Blu-ray Disc content producers. BDAA is an associate member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the HDMI home theater group.
The Blu-ray Disc is based on the internationally standardized Blu-ray Disc Format Specification Revision 1.0, which was released on February 16, 2006. A Blu-ray Disc is capable of storing up to 50 GB or more of data, in contrast to the 4.7 GB of the DVD.
The Bluray Discs use the UDF file system, and are compatible with Windows XP and newer. DVD-Video is not supported on Bluray Discs. The Bluray Discs store data as a combination of UDF folders, with the file system metadata being stored separately. UDF supports a maximum of 32,768 folders on a single disc. Current Bluray Discs can hold 4.7 GB for BD-ROMs (BD-REs being around 8.5 GB) and 6.6 GB for BD-R DL discs. BD-R DL discs can also be written at up to 24x speed. As for DVD-Video, non-linear editing on Bluray Discs is possible using the BD-J.
Due to the much larger media size and lower quality of the data, the speed of Blu-ray is low. While 480p is low enough for real-time playback, higher resolution Blu-ray streams (720p, 1080p, etc.) cannot be played back without some loss of quality. However, Blu-ray discs can have up to 1 terabyte (TB) of storage (60 GB is typical) and can be read at speeds of up to 24×.
1080p/i/p/s is a hybrid of 1080p/i/p and 720p/p/i/s. The main difference is that it combines the resolution of 720p with the frame rate of 1080p. It shares the same pixel aspect ratio as 1080p, but it is not a true 1080p, because the frame rate is not higher than that of 720p.
In terms of data compression, 1080p/i is generally considered the most demanding, because many frames need to fit in the available memory. 1080p/i uses a higher bit rate than 1080p/p, although the difference is not significant and is negligible in most cases. The higher frame rate of 1080p/i is also not as significant as that of 720p or 1080i. However, higher frame rate means that the total video bandwidth is higher. In general, the higher the resolution, the more memory is needed. For example, a 1080p/i source with a frame rate of 50 fps has 3.75 times the bandwidth of a 1080p/p source with the same frame rate.
