The developer worked very closely with Id, the creators of the Quake series to ensure that the game represents the Quake name in a very positive light. For the most part they have succeeded. Even if you have not played any of the other quake games, you should quickly find yourself immersed in the worlds and looking to battle on. If it were not for a few minor issues, this would have been a really good game. As it stands now, it is still pretty fun with non-stop action.

Version 1.27 runs perfect for me, but sometimes it happens to me that when I go from one map to another, the game drops a lot of fps, so I have to save the game and exit the game and start it again and load the game and then The fps are normal now. This did not happen to me with the previous version. Maybe it's windows 11 or it could be my pc or this version of quake2xp.
Unlike Quake, where hardware-accelerated graphics controllers were supported only with later patches, Quake II came with OpenGL support out of the box. Later downloads from id Software added support for AMD's 3DNow! instruction set for improved performance on their K6-2 processors, and Rendition released a native renderer for their V1000 graphics chip. The latest version is 3.21. This update includes numerous bug fixes and new levels designed for multiplayer deathmatch. Version 3.21, available as source code on id Software's FTP server, has no improved functionality over version 3.20 and is simply a slight modification to make compiling for Linux easier.
Since the release of the Quake II source code, several updates from third-party projects to the game engine have been created; the most prominent of these are projects focused on graphical enhancements to the game such as most notable "Yamagi Quake II", Quake2maX, EGL, Quake II Evolved, and KMQuake II. The source release also revealed numerous security flaws[10] which can result in remote compromise of both the Quake II client and server. As id Software no longer maintains Quake II, most third-party engines include fixes for these bugs. The unofficial patch 3.24 that fixes bugs and adds only meager tweaks is recommended for Quake II purists, as it is not intended to add new features or be an engine mod in its own right.[11] The most popular server-side engine modification for multiplayer, R1Q2, is generally recommended as a replacement for the 3.20 release for both clients and servers. In July 2003, Vertigo Software released a port of Quake II for the Microsoft .NET platform, using Managed C++, called Quake II .NET.[12] It became a poster application for the language, showcasing the powerful interoperability between .NET and standard C++ code. It remains one of the top downloads on the Visual C++ website. In May 2004, Bytonic Software released a port of Quake II (called Jake2) written in Java using JOGL. In 2010 Google ported Jake2 to HTML5, running in Safari and Chrome.[13]
Bringing this post back because Ive got the same problem... the latest drivers for the intel 945/965 graphics have serious compatibility problems with the 64 bit version of windows and opengl applications. The generic driver will run these programs but the speed of the generic driver is dismal. the applications load as normal but have no display output. you can still hear sound/menus etc.

Hey so i recently decided to replay Quake 2. I downloaded quake2xp so I can play on Win 7 no problem and have CD audio playing by putting the music in the music folder on my hd.Anyway I noticed the character movement is sooo off. Sometimes you move a little to the side when walking forward or backward. So I thought, wow Quake2xp is pretty shitty so I downloaded Quake2 berserker, another source port. Exactly same movement problem.So I fired up Quake 2 in software mode since that seems to be the only way I can run vanilla quake 2 on windows 7 just to see what happens. The character speed when running feels a bit slower but other than that it's the SAME buggy movement. What the HELL!!!Why is Quake 2's movement so weird?!?!?! Anyone else feel this? Is it my control settings? I just configured standard WASD and mouse look controls.Now that I think about it I vaguely remember having this problem back when I played it long ago. I just kinda ignored it. I thought: "weird oh well"To see what I'm talking about:Basically, fire up level 1. Face the drop pod. Move over a little to the right. Turn about 20 degrees to the right. Move back and forth. Notice how you slide to the right a bit.Also go through the glass on the side and in to the vents. Try walking back and forth down there. Notice how there are times when it feels like you slide sideways a bit when walking straight.My first thought as a game programmer is that this is due to precision problems but not even Doom had this problem and everything was programmed with integers and not floating point types. Quake 1 doesn't seem to have this problem. How does Quake 2 have this problem? 2b1af7f3a8
