If this option is given mkvmerge(1) tries to do an automatic multiplexing for the chapters. After it has read the first chapter the remaining chapters are output, each with the time of the first chapter set as their start time. In the case that there is overlapping content in a chapter the data in the last chapter is used for the overlapping content. So the amount of data written to this chapter is only the difference between the start time and the end time of the first chapter plus the data that overlaps the end time of the first chapter. For example, if the start time of the first chapter is set to time=10 and that chapter has a duration of 10 seconds and the next chapter has a start time of time=20 and a duration of 2 seconds, the second chapter will only contain the data that is the 10 seconds minus the 2 seconds that the first chapter has. So in this case there will be only 3 seconds of data written to the second chapter.
On Windows and MacOS X there is a GUI version of mkvmerge(1) which is called msvd. It is designed to be run from the command line and thus is especially convenient when creating back-up versions of video files.
To be able to remove parts from the output file, the output file has to be opened for writing and a file seek has to be performed to a position before the start of the part to be removed. This position has to be specified with the “-…seek” option (or there has to be a seek button on the GUI). You can also specify this position with the “--keep-trimming” option (or there have to be a separate seek button on the GUI).
mkvmerge(1) can be used from the command line. This is particularly convenient for batch conversion of a large number of files. For that a tool like mplayer or mencoder is probably more efficient.
The --trimming-range (section Trimming) is similar to the parts mode but the range names are used as names for the parts created by mkvmerge(1). The parts mode cannot be used together with the trimming mode.
