I like the way Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition puts more emphasis on the gameplay aspects and less on the locales. There's less of a focus on story and more of a focus on racing, and the result is a game that feels more like a racing game than just a game that happens to be called Midnight Club. Sure, you can look at the different cities around the world and the different game modes, but you can do that with other titles as well. The PS2 classic's addition of new tracks and round-robin modes only adds to the fun.
Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition is a perfect addition to the PSP portfolio. It's like a sequel to a console game that has been made portable, and it's a fun addition to the portable game lineup. The game itself is short -- you'll race 12 tracks in total -- but its addictive nature will keep you racing well beyond that, and the multiplayer round-robin modes will add hours to the game.
I don't know about you, but when I think of a game I'd like to play that lets you blow up cars, I think of Midnight Club. I don't care where the city is, where the car was made, what brand it is or what the color of it is. As long as I can tear up the screen and watch as my car smashes into a wall, then I'm good.
The real-time multiplayer mode is here as well, and works as advertised. It is an optional mode that allows you to race other players in a series of races over a period of time. Ranks can be earned and races are held to keep you from the bottom of the list too long. The online mode uses an in-game matchmaking system and works well in the absence of other players. The fact that there's not a chat feature is not a disappointment, as the game is already heavy on the vehicular action.
This game is a great addition to the PSP's already impressive lineup. The racing is fun, the graphics are impressive, the controls are tight and the courses are challenging. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.
