Graduate students are offered individualized instruction and supervised research in their area of choice. The Program in Liberal Studies provides a variety of courses within the liberal arts disciplines that provide the basis for advanced study in any of the fields in which students are later to specialize. These courses cover American and world history, American politics, European history, philosophy, and political theory, as well as the social sciences and natural sciences. In addition, our faculty members teach a wide range of courses in the Liberal Studies program in the College.
The Liberal Studies Program provides graduate-level instruction and research in the liberal arts disciplines that prepare students to think clearly and critically about social, political, and cultural issues and to develop a knowledge base that is broad, deep, interdisciplinary, and nuanced. In addition to the required courses, the Program offers a wide range of elective courses and special topics seminars, ranging from seminars on the philosophy of literature to seminars on a particular body of literature or philosophy. Students are encouraged to take courses in the Liberal Studies Program that are of interest to them, and to develop their own research and teaching interests and skills.
The Department of Anthropology & Geography is a small department of approximately 20 faculty members within the College of Humanities, and we encourage students to take courses from a variety of disciplines, including the social sciences, the natural sciences, and the humanities. We offer a wide range of courses, including Anthropology, Classical Studies, Geography, History, and Interdisciplinary Studies. Anthropology consists of two concentrations, the first being Cultural Anthropology (a cross-disciplinary course focusing on the study of human society and culture at the local, national, and global level) and the second being Biological Anthropology (a multidisciplinary course focusing on the human animal and its place in the natural world). Geography encompasses four concentrations, including Landscape, Physical and Regional Geography (a cross-disciplinary course focusing on the physical and human aspects of the Earth), Cultural Geography (a multidisciplinary course focusing on the human dimension of the Earth), and History (an interdisciplinary course focusing on the study of human history and human societies).
The BAIS major and minor apply a global view to the study of history, culture, politics, economics, and other fields. Students gain experience in the study of history, the study of culture, and the application of theory to the study of world politics, economics, and the environment.
The BAIS minor prepares students to take their first steps toward the major, while the BAIS major broadens students’ awareness of world political, social, and economic systems by providing the student with an understanding of the history, culture, and politics of a variety of nations and cultures. 827ec27edc
