To the right is an example of how the code works. The container specifies how many total columns exist, either 12 or 16. For the most part, you will only ever need to specify a class name of grid_XX, where XX represents the column width.

Nowadays the basic 960px or 1200px grid systems are a bit too small for some design prototypes. Although the margin widths of these uniform grid templates do vary, each one adheres to an overall width of 960px. Grids systems within web design provide a very important use for both the designer and the developer. Grids work as a guide as to where elements should be placed instead of randomly firing information at an artboard without any real cohesion. Setting up a grid at the beginning of a design can prevent the designer from running into a myriad of problems when it comes to layout further down the line.
Guidelines used to be the norm for web layouts in Photoshop, but with more specialised programmes for web design, such as Adobe XD and Figma, grids are much easier to set up and provide your final concept with the cohesion and ideal user experience that we all so crave.
Grid Systems follow a few rules, but the main one is displaying the information in a readable format for all consumers. They are there to provide a hierarchy of information and to display elements correctly. There are many types of grid systems used throughout the design world, but for web design, column and hierarchal grids are the norms. Grids display a number of columns within a container of a website, separated by a gutter.
At Wibble, our concepts start out on paper. Using a dotted notepad to sketch out the wireframes of a website gives an idea of where each element will sit on a page. It is best to start this way, even if the sketches are incoherent to the naked eye, as it gives an impression of how the elements will sit within the column grid.
We design using the 12 column grid. Just like the 960 rule, but expand the boundaries of the container. We have even columns, just like the 960 rule, and use an even gutter. We alter this for the actual screen size we design for. The most popular screen size as of writing is 1366×768 on desktop and 375×667 on mobile. While these screen sizes change quicker than apple removing every conceivable port on an iPhone, we have found that these are the best suited for our design and dev team. The container we aim for is 1200px, this allows the 12 columns and a gutter of 30px with plenty of space outside the boundaries of the container. Whilst the container size can change depending on the site we always aim for a 12 column grid that allows for maximum responsiveness for mobile devices, and even larger screens.
With our grid set we layout out our elements. These are images, text, video, blocks, or any other content that may appear on a website. Elements must always fall within the columns, they should not fall in-between the gutter. This again allows for screen size changes from mobile to larger screens. If elements were to fall outside the column they would not flow correctly and the user experience would take a hit.
However, there is a caveat to this rule. If an element features both picture and some text, and flows over four columns, as long as the parent element is contained the child element can wander in the middle of the gutter. This technically means it is within the grid as it is seen as one singular element as opposed to 2 separate elements. Makes total sense right?
Mobile is different. Naturally fitting 12 columns onto such a smaller screen would provide little to no benefit. In this case, we simplify the grid using the same principles but use 4 columns, keeping the dividend of 12 but on a much smaller scale. This process has worked for us and as screen size changes and phones get bigger we will inevitably need to look back on container sizes, but the principle will still remain the same. 12 columns with an even gutter, and a standard size of container that can be scaled evenly.
We'll be using the 960 grid system from start to finish, so if you've ever wondered what it's like to use the system, now's a great time to learn! We'll be making a few deviations from the norm, but for the most part we'll be using 960gs in the design and coding phases.
Inside the main folder (what you have just downloaded from ), go to "templates->photoshop" and open "960_grid_16_col.psd" in Photoshop. Rename this file to "index.psd" and save it in a new folder of your choosing, as shown in image A - 1a.
Open the "960_grid_12_col.psd" in Photoshop (from the same folder you have opened the "960_grid_16_col.psd" file. Now unlock "12 Col Grid" layer and position, then drag it to our newly created index.psd file as shown in the image A - 1b and A - 1c. Also unlock the layer and position of "grid_16_col".
You may be asking yourself, "Why should I to use two different grid files"? As the grid_16 can't give us three equal columns, we need to use grid_12 as well. The 960gs system is actually built to be used this way, so it won't cause any conflicts down the line. We'll also use these two grids in the XHTML conversion phase.
Select the "grid_12_col" and "grid_16_col" layers, then select "Align top edges" and "Align horizontal centers" from the options panel as shown in image A - 1d (while selecting these options, make sure you have also activated the Move Tool (V)). And your final result should look like image A - 1d.
Select both grid layer and press "Ctrl+T" or go to "Edit->Free Transform" then drag those grids as shown in image A - 3b. Now lock both grid layers and hide the "grid_12_col layer" as shown in image A - 3c.
By default we have positioned the guides of grid_16_col as we are started from the grid_16_col.psd file. We don't have guides for grid_12_col, but we really don't need them as we'll only use grid_12_col in rare circumstances.
Our document width is 1020px; When using the 960 grid system, we are supposed to use 940px for our content width. We're going to deviate just a bit from the 960 model by using a 20px left and right padding (40px total) for its content column. So our total content width is going to be 980px. Select the Background layer and press "Ctrl+Backspace" or "Ctrl+F5" or go to "Edit->Fill" to call Fill dialogue box, then select "Color..." option from "Use". And set the value to "e7e7e7" as shown in image A - 4a
Now select the "Rounded Rectangle Tool" set "Radius" to "10 px" in the Options panel and set "Foreground" color to "f1f1f1". Draw a rounded rectangle in the artboard measuring size 980 x 150px. Name this layer header bg and place this layer inside a layer group and name that group Header. And organize your layer palette as shown in image A - 4b. And always keep grid layers above all the layers in the layer palette.
First, we are going to create four column promo items. To create four columns group, enable grid_16_col. Divide those 16 columns with four and you'll find four equal width columns. Populate your columns with the content as shown in image C - 2a. Next, place a line with the same settings of header's hr position it according to image C - 2a.
This is a three column promo section. For this, we'll hide the grid_16_col and unhide grid_12_col. Use every fourth column as a single column to place promo items. First draw a rectangle measuring 300 x 140px and place it as shown in image C - 2b. Now place an image on top of this layer then select and crop image areas (which are overdrawn from its lower rectangle area) as we did it for image slider section.
